Integrated Hospital Services
Emergency, Critical and Operative care (ECO) represent a patient-centered continuum of care spanning from the community, through medical transport to emergency treatment, on-route and in- hospital emergency department, to critical care in the intensive care units, and the needed operative care.Operative care span both anesthesia and surgery services in theatres and ambulatory centers, while surgeons and anesthesia professionals may deliver emergency, critical and operative care, including obstetric care, as part of comprehensive peri-operative care and beyond.Emergency and critical care may be delivered in an ambulance or in an emergency unit, an intensive care unit or a theatre by physicians, nurses or medical technicians. Nurses deliver as much emergency care around the world as doctors, and both will be trained as specialists in the first hours of care.
Robust ECO services will require us to work together with the Civil Defense Department, and medical transport organization. Only a coordinated and strategic approach to the entire ECO continuum can deliver effective care for people with key high-burden conditions, such as injury, sepsis, stroke, cardiac emergencies, or complications of pregnancy. The distinction between emergency and critical care, between emergency and operative care or between critical and operative care is highly variable by context, but these services are highly interdependent in all contexts.
